Chapter 5

The little caterpillar climbed a maple tree to find a scrumptious green leaf to eat. It was long and hard work to climb up the rough bark. Finally she settled down on a leaf that hung from a low branch.  After a brief, rest against the smooth leaf, she began to eat.

Across the sun flew a large bird shape.  Then down it came, landing on a branch right above Katie. She crouched on her leaf, hoping her green body blended into the green of the leaf.

“Don’t be concerned. You’re too small for me to eat,” Bright-Eye the Bald Eagle said. “I prefer rabbits or small birds to eat—or fish.”

Katie let out a sigh.

The eagle continued speaking from his perch above her, “I have heard from the tall pine tree that you are wondering about your particular song. As you know, that will only come from your own heart. And if you would like, I will sing my song for inspiration.”

“I would love to hear your high-flying song.”

“That’s fine. Remember, soon you will be experiencing your own fly-free nature, after a time of rest.”

Katie wondered what Bright-Eye meant….

                   Bright-Eye Eagle’s Song

As I soar high above the trees,

Calm, strong, clear-sighted,

I see far, know where to be–

            Hunting, know what’s required.

Or on top of the air I rest

With nary a wing -beat to float me.

Bring a rabbit back to craggy nest–

So Mom and eaglets can feed.

Way beyond the mountain tops I go,

Imagine my perspective…

 Brighten your dreams with

Rainbows

When you free

 Your Self to Live.

“I would love to take a ride on your back, Bright-Eye, and look Down on the tree tops, except, I don’t think that I could see that far.”

The eagle chuckled. “We each have our special gifts. I believe that you will be discovering yours Very Soon.”

“Oh, thank you for your confidence.  And thank you again for your song. I’m going to curl up next to this twig for a nap now.”

“Have a good rest. See you later.” The eagle flew off to the mountain where his family and nest awaited him.

Katie the Caterpiller: Chapter 6

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Katie curled up for a rest.  She didn’t know that this would be a magical rest created by Mother Nature to transform her totally. Gradually and naturally, her shape changed into soft wings, a little head with antennae, while a hard covering formed around her new soft and delicate body. Then one warm, spring day, it was time to come out.

“I feel Gooood,” Katie said to herself. She stretched out her four new wings to dry in the sunlight. “I feel like singing.”  And without thinking about it, she piped out in her new butterfly voice,

                   De de de de

                    De de de de

                  I am Joy!

It was a very simple song. “I found my song!” Then she looked at herself. “I’m not a caterpillar anymore. I’m a butterfly! I require a new name!” So she named herself Bodacious Butterfly because that’s how she felt about herself—inside and out. “My friends can call me Bo.” Her wings being dry, she took off for a test flight and landed on a nearby rose.

“Hello. What’s your name? Mine’s Bo”

“Hello. I’m known as Rosalina. Would you like some nectar and some pollen to brush on my neighbors?”

“Yes, please. That would be yummy! I will try out my handy new nectar tube. Thank you, Ms. Rosalina.”  Then she took off again. “I’m flying just like Eagle.  I’m going to fly to all my friends and sing them my new song. So off she went to visit Pamela Pine Tree, Felicia Fawn, Tommy Turtle, and Bright-Eye Eagle (when he had landed on a low branch). All throughout meadow and forest, a new tune floated. It became a hit: “De de de de, de de de de, I am Joy!” repeated many times by trees, animals, and even her new flower friends with their attendant flower fairies whistling an accompaniment.
