KATIE CATERPILLER FINDS HER SONG
(AND A NEW NAME)

Chapter 1

Once upon a time, some tiny eggs–smaller than your little finger—were laid on a leaf. From these eggs hatched green caterpillars. The feistiest caterpillar was named Katie. “I’m hungry,” Katie said. She crawled to the edge of the leaf and began munching.

Each day, just as the spring sun was rising, Katie woke up and went around a leaf to munch away. “There must be something more to do with my life than just eat and grow bigger,” she thought, her mouth full. Just then she heard soft singing coming from nearby.  It sounded calm and joyful, almost like the wind. Katie raised her tiny head as far as she could from the leaf she sat upon.

Chapter 2

It was her friend, Pamela Pine Tree, singing:

   PAMELA PINE TREE’S SONG
  As the morning rises sweet,
I stand tall in rays of sun.
As I sink my roots strong and deep,
  I give peace to everyone.
Red cardinals, squirrels, birds and bees
  Move among my branches.
I give out oxygen you breathe
So Earth may perform her dances.

“That’s a beautiful song, Ms. Pamela. I can learn how to give a wonderful home and nourishing atmosphere from you.”

“Thank you, Katie.” Pamela rustled her bright green needles in the morning breeze. “The song just comes out as I enjoy the sun.”

“I wish I knew My song to sing. Then I would know who I am, and what special gift I have to share here on Mother Earth. I know!” Katie wiggled her lithe body with excitement. “I’ll go around to all my Nature friends and listen to their songs. Maybe one of them will be like mine.”

“Great idea! Good luck,” said Pamela Pine Tree, waving the ends of her branches as a good-bye.

Katie carefully climbed off her leaf and wriggled and crawled down the trunk of her tree. Just before she reached the ground, she looked down and saw a baby painted turtle crawling by. “Here comes Friend #2.”
