How Alexander the Gnome Found the Sun

Chapter 1

Once upon a time, maybe last Saturday, a gnome named Alexander decided he wanted to go up above his cozy, earthen home.  Alexander was different from his gnome friends. They were perfectly content in their little cottages hidden among the roots of trees, snuggled at the ends of mole tunnels, or perched among the hidden rocky cave ledges.

Alexander wanted something more.  He wanted to explore.  He had heard that up above (although he wasn’t sure where that was), there was a great, bright light that grew big and then small until it disappeared.  Then it grew big again.  It was very hot and was called The Sun. He decided, “I am going to see the world of the Sun.

He took his spade, found a nice patch of earth away from the gnome homes, and began to dig.  The digging kept getting harder until he hit a big rock.  “Maybe I need to try the opposite direction,” he thought.  So he tried again, digging above his head and jumping out of the way of the falling dirt. Finally, he felt his spade break through something and a thin stream of light streamed down.

“Hurray,” he shouted and scrambled up, taking his spade with him to make the hole bigger.  He stuck his head through, and there was a whole new Earth unlike anything he had ever seen.  Colors shone everywhere—soft greens, yellows, reds, and the nice brown of the earth.  He looked up and saw blue that didn’t stop.

Many beings of all sizes waved their arms or gazed at him. Thin brown poles with bobbing heads and colorful wavy hair smiled at him.  Through the moving air they tossed him a beautiful, sweet smell. They were the flower fairies with their flowers.  Behind them stood huge and silent graceful tree spirits with whispering fringed robes.  They blended into very thick, rough poles and waved their many green hands.

Chapter 2

Alexander left the forest edge and headed towards a broad body of water.  Above it he saw tiny glittering, sparkly beings with skinny bodies, big, round eyes, and four wings.  They were dragonflies!  On top of each one, riding it like an amazingly agile horse, was a tiny fairy in a silver beaded outfit that reflected the moving light. “Hello!” Alexander called to them, and they waved their tiny wands at him.

Now, although he didn’t know it, Alexander had popped up on the top side of the Earth’s skin when morning had just begun. It rose orange above the lake’s horizon. “I found the Sun!” he shouted. But as the sun rose higher, his eyes, which were used to the darkness underground, began to feel funny.  He decided to find a spot under a thick grove of trees with many very thin and pointy fingers, and a soothing, spicy smell. He made a little pile of dried needles and curled up next to the biggest pine tree. The kindly pine tree spirit patted him on the head, saying, “Be comfortable little one from underground. You are safe with me.”

And of course he was—from foxes or cougars or not nice people–because Alexander couldn’t be harmed by them as he, like the fairies, wood elves, and other Nature Spirits, was made of light!  Humans can only see him and his fairy friends when their hearts are open and their minds are free.  So maybe you’ll see him in the woods one day.

After a nice nap under the pine tree, Alexander woke up and stretched.  He eyes felt better.  The shadows were long, and the sun was going down.  “Thank you for protecting me,” he said to the pine tree.  The tree smiled at him, humming a pleasant song with the wind.  Someone else was humming along in low harmony nearby.  It was a stocky guy just about his height.  His back was leaning into a big boulder.
