Chapter 3

“Hello.  My name’s Alexander.”

 “Hi. I’m Kurt,” he rumbled.

 “I’ve just come from underground.”

“Welcome to Above Ground,” Kurt said, his chuckle sounding like a rocky river.  They each waved goodbye, and Alexander walked away from the forest edge, up a little hill, and to the edge of a lake with clear water.  His eyes brightened.  This water was so different from the small streams in the caves and shallow pools.  Here was a beautiful expanse of scintillating waves, mallard pairs floating on the surface, and reflections of wooly, gray patches that he saw, when he looked up, really lived in the sky.

Chapter 4

Hearing laughter that sounded like tiny bells, he saw three beautiful ladies in short gowns whipped up by the waves and breeze. They danced through the water towards him.

They were so beautiful that Alexander suddenly felt shy. The one in gold with green eyes and wavy hair flowed over to him, “I haven’t seen you by our lake before,” she said.
The sun was an orange ball plunging into the lake.

“I’ve just come up from underground.  My name’s Alexander the gnome.”

“I’m glad you’ve come.  My name’s Selene, and these are my two sisters,” she gestured at them inclusively, “Staria and Lalia. We are water beings, or undines.” Serene brushed Alexander’s forehead with her hand.  It felt like laughing water droplets. The sisters swept back into the lake, waving. “See you later.”

 “See you later,” he called.
